Welcome to the website of the Surgical Care and Outcomes Assessment Program (SCOAP)!

SCOAP is:

A model of collaboration in which Washington State's surgical community, in partnership with key stakeholders, can work together toward a common goal—improving patient care and health outcomes.
Healthcare professionals defining quality metrics, tracking hospital performance, and reducing errors and variability in surgical care.
A voluntary program for hospitals to discover widespread opportunities for quality improvement and cost savings for common surgical procedures performed across the state.
Helping surgeons and nurses deliver the highest quality of service by collecting information about the care patients receive and benchmarking it against standards.

Under the MicroSCOAP

Governor Christine Gregoire champions better healthcare through her support of SCOAP

Governor Gregoire is scheduled to deliver the opening greeting to SCOAP’s 1st Annual Meeting on June 15, 2008.

The Governor’s Life Sciences Discovery Fund has been set up to promote innovative life sciences research and SCOAP was the largest grantee, receiving $1.3 million in funding awarded in January 2008.

This grant will be used to expand the scope of SCOAP so that all citizens in Washington State can receive safer, more effective and less costly surgical care.

SCOAP is proud to announce that, as of March 2008, 25 hospitals have committed to providing excellence in healthcare through SCOAP.

SCOAP in the OR

The SCOAP OR Safety Checklist rolled out at the University of Washington and versions of this list are being developed at Virginia Mason and Swedish Hospital. The OR Safety checklist, which goes beyond the JCAHO "time out" concept, guarantees that vital steps to a successful procedure are carried out during each case. The goal is that every hospital in Washington State will be using a SCOAP OR Safety Checklist by the end of 2008.
